Hand Rearing a Caique Parrot Takes Weeks of Work
A baby Caique Parrot is delicate and to hand rear one takes a lot of TLC and nurturing time. Therefore, hand reared birds sell for a higher price than one that is reared by its parents.
The hand rearing process begins at about 3 weeks where we hand feed the baby a specialized formula five times throughout the day, including early morning and late night. Their feathers are cleaned after each feed and their bedding is cleaned at least twice a day to ensure a healthy environment for their growth and wellbeing. And this is only the beginning. As they grow, they need handling and human interaction throughout the day which accustoms them to being part of the family.
Above is a brief description of the time and effort it takes to hand rear and tame a baby Caique Parrot. It is a very dedicated six-week period for our hand rearers who love what they do.
Caique Parrot Dietary Requirements
At Victorian Bird Company, we feed our Caique parrots a diet of 40% tiny parrot seed, high-quality crumbles, and pellets; 50% fruits and vegetables such as carrots, grapes, bananas, and bok choy; and 10% grains and nuts such as almonds. All provide necessary vitamins and nutrients and are sold in our store.
Fresh, clean water is also a must. Caique Parrots living indoors require a Vitamin D3 and Calcium Supplement, like Avian Sunglo, which you can find in-store

Caique Parrot Cage and Accessories
Your Caique Parrot needs a cage. There should be plenty of space for your bird to stretch its wings and move around. Minimum size of 90x140cm is recommended. More importantly, a playground or area where your parrot can be free.
This kind of bird needs to be out of its cage so they’ll stay super friendly.

Breeding Caique Parrots
Caique Parrots reach sexual maturity around three years of age. They breed during late spring. The female usually lays four eggs, typically taking around three and a half weeks to hatch. Those chicks leave the nest at ten weeks and are ready for new homes 2-3 weeks after leaving the nest.
A parrot-sized nest box approximately 30×70 cm lined with parrot nesting material available from VBC is suitable for breeding.
Caique Parrots
The Caique Parrot is native to South America. They are highly intelligent, vibrant birds who are love to play. These birds are easy to train and sometimes train themselves. Caique Parrots are known for their unique activity where they lay on their back with their feet in the air.
Aside from that, Caique Parrots respond best to food rewards and can talk moderately well if taught correctly. They grow to 23 cm and can live for up to 30 years.
Caique males and females are indistinguishable from each other. To know with complete certainty the sex of your Caique Parrot, you should get a DNA test.
