Choosing The Right Bird Cage

Many people ask us, ‘How big does a cage need to be for their bird?’ There are many different factors in choosing a birdcage that is suitable. Some of those are:

– Whether the bird is being kept inside or outside. Outside birds will need to be protected from the weather; therefore, there will have to be adequate room inside the cage to install a nesting box so the birds won’t get cold.

– Also, the cage size is determined by whether the bird you choose is a hand-reared or a tame bird. These birds will spend a lot of time out of the Bird Cage on a Playground or bird stand; therefore, a large cage won’t be necessary.

– If your bird will never come out of the cage, then the cage must be bigger so the bird can fly around and get some exercise.

Birdcages sizes are always the buyer’s opinion as there is no right or wrong, just what you feel comfortable with.

Remember that birds have a long lifespan, so choose your cage accordingly. Diet is more important than cage size, and let VBC explain a bit more about diet further down the page.

Pet Bird Diet Information

It is one of the most critical topics as nutrition will ensure your bird lives a happy, healthy life.

A basic seed and water diet is inadequate for your bird! Around 50% of its diet must be high protein pellets or crumbles. There are different brands on the market, all of which have high protein levels, which will ensure your pet bird’s health.

These days many birds are brought up on these diets, so they are familiar. However, some birds have been brought up on a total seed diet and will take some convincing to change. Perseverance is the key.

50/50 pellet and crumble diet.

Removing all the seeds from the cage will make the bird look around for other options in food. It can take a few weeks to transition from a bird bought up on a total seed diet to a 50/50 pellet and crumble diet. Many seed mixes sold at supermarkets are of poor quality and detrimental to your bird’s health.

We want to explain this in a bit more detail. Seed mixes contain many types of grains, and some grains are more expensive than others, so to keep the prices low and profits high, some outlets and brands adjust the grain formula according to what the cheapest grain is on the market at that time of the year.

There may be good or bad crops from year to year, meaning the prices for certain grains may be very cheap or very expensive. If one of the grains is costly, it is substituted for another grain that is more affordable, irrespective of whether it’s what the bird likes or requires.

For Example

Grains such as plain canary seed and millets, the primary staple food in many mixtures, will be substituted for grains such as wheat, sorghum, or crushed maize, which is cheap and heavy, but the birds don’t eat it.

We are trying to make a suitable seed formula suitable for the bird’s health, not according to price. Another trick used is quality grey stripe sunflower seed which the birds’ love, is substituted with poorer quality black sunflower seed. If you have a lorikeet, make sure you feed them on a nectar diet as a seed diet is not suitable.
