Lorikeet Melbourne

If you are looking for a Lorikeet and live in Melbourne or Geelong you have come to the right place. We are Victorian Bird Company in Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne’s West, Mountain Gate Shopping Centre in the East and Norlane in Geelong, and we specialise in all types of Lorikeets. Some of the Lorikeets are bred on the property in our Breeding Facility.

How do you choose which Lorikeet suits you? Firstly you need to decide on what you want from your pet; a very tame and interactive bird or an aviary bird, maybe for breeding. This will determine the type and investment.

We have detailed below the different types of Lorikeets available, read on and enjoy.

Check out the video below of one of our Baby Lorikeets.

Lorikeet Pricing

The price for an Lorikeet ranges from $199 – $899.

The variance in price is effected by the following :

Fledgling – From $199-$299 (for more available breeds)

A fledgling that has been raised by its parents, is still a baby but has left the nest and is flying in an aviary. These birds can be taught to talk; however they are difficult to train unless highly experienced and dedicated

Handled Baby – From $299-$399 (for more available breeds)

A baby that has been fed by its parents and when it is a couple of weeks away from leaving the nest, we spend time handling it. This may be 15 minutes, 3-4 times per day up until it fledges. Then the baby is taken inside the house and with a bit more human attention will become friendly. With this type of Lorikeet, constant handling is normally required to keep the bird perfectly tame.

Hand Reared Baby – This is the best way to invest in a baby companion pet for many kisses and cuddles. $499-$899 (for more available breeds).

Rarer Species – From $1,999

Depending on the mutation and for a rarer species like the Black Cap or Black Lorikeets please enquire instore for current availability and price.

Hand Rearing Lorikeets Takes Weeks of Work

A baby Lorikeet is a delicate being and to hand rear one takes a lot of TLC and nurturing time. Therefore, hand reared birds sell for a higher price than one that is reared by its parents.

The hand rearing process begins at about 3 weeks where we hand feed the baby a specialized formula five times throughout the day, including early morning and late night. Their feathers are cleaned after each feed and their bedding is cleaned at least twice a day to ensure a healthy environment for their growth and wellbeing. And this is only the beginning. As they grow, they need handling and human interaction throughout the day which accustoms them to being part of the family.

Above is a brief description of the time and effort it takes to hand rear and tame a baby Lorikeet.  It is a very dedicated six-week period for our hand rearers who love what they do.

Availability

Another variable is the season and availability of babies. Eg off breeding season means that there is a scarcity and the price maybe much higher.

Lorikeet Dietary Requirements

The Lorikeet diet is much different from regular birds as they are not seed-eaters, and Lorikeets have a brush tongue and will only eat a fruit and nectar diet.

The perfect complete diet is Dry Lorikeet Food, a Wet Food, and plenty of fresh fruit. The two types of food are available from our store.

Breeding Lorikeets

f you are interested in breeding Lorikeets we can help. The best advice we can offer is to make sure you DNA your birds to make sure they are a definite pair.

So many times we have seen over the years people that have lorikeets that are not breeding and the biggest problem is they have 2 of the same sex. It comes about after being told by the seller that they are a pair when the seller doesn’t know.

If you want a 100% genuine pair that will give you the best chance of breeding talk to us about getting a pair DNAd. The price for the pair of Rainbow Lorikeets will range between $299 – $399 pair.

Lorikeet Birds

A question asked all the time is, Are Lorikeets messy? The answer is YESYES, and YES. Because the food they eat is nectar, their poop is very runny.

If you plan on buying one, make sure you keep the Lorikeet cage on tiles or an area where it is easy to clean.

There are also much cheaper Lorikeets from around $80 each. These Lorikeets are more mature birds around 1-2 years and are nearly impossible to train to make a pet. This type of bird would be more suitable to keeping outside in an aviary.

Our recommendation is if you want an awesome Lorikeet, definitely buy the Hand-Reared, Hand-Tame Baby.
