How to Sex Budgies?
Sexing Budgies is not that hard in about 70% of cases. Budgies have nostrils above their beak, which is called a ‘cere’. Generally, the male will have a blue cere, and the female will have a brown cere. The female’s cere can vary between light brown and dark brown when she is in breeding conditions. That is the easy part.
Now the tricky part. In juvenile and baby budgies where the female has not started to mature, the cere will be blue/ purple, similar to a male. The difference is that the cere will begin changing to a white colour. So when you see blue or purple with white starting to appear around the nostril area, it will most likely be a female. The cere will change to white on a female, then switch to brown when ready to breed.
These are difficult to distinguish between the Yellow and White Budgies (Lutino/ Albino) and the Danish Pied or Recessive Pied Budgies. The male budgie will not go blue, and in most cases, his cere will be a very light purple or a light skin colour. Regularly people make this mistake because the male is very similar to the female.
