At VBC, we feed our Moustache Parrots small seed and provide a high-quality crumble to add protein and nutrients to help keep them healthy. These requirements can be found in our store.

We also recommend offering a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, such as carrots and broccoli, as excellent sources of vitamins. Fresh, clean water is a must. For indoor parrots, we recommend a Vitamin D3 and Calcium supplement—at VBC we use ‘Avian Sunglo’.

The Moustache Parrot is described as easy to breed. They reach maturity at 2–3 years of age, and can breed twice a year between August and October, laying 2–4 eggs. Chicks hatch after 22 days and leave the nest at 6–8 weeks, becoming independent 10–14 weeks after leaving the nest.

A suitable nest box size listed here is approximately 25 × 45 cm, lined with parrot nesting material available from VBC.

Moustache Parrots are native to the Himalayas and southern China, down to Indonesia. They are described here as sweet, charming birds that can suit the entire family.

They are intelligent, enjoy a challenge, are easy to train, and are described as adequate talkers. They are medium-sized parrots that can grow up to 40 cm long and live between 20 and 25 years.

Colouring described on this page includes mainly green with a dull pink patch on the chest, grey heads, and black feathering under the beak, plus black markings resembling a moustache.

Males are distinguishable by bright red beaks (usually fully coloured by around 8 months old). Females may have a slightly blue tinge to the head and completely black beaks.
