Canary Variety, Colour and Everyday Enjoyment
At Victorian Bird Co, we stock a range of canaries to suit different preferences. Some people are drawn to bright yellow birds. Others love the deeper tones of red factor canaries, the lighter look of white canaries, or the extra visual interest of variegated canaries.
Canaries are not chosen for hands-on interaction the way parrots often are. Their charm is different. They bring movement, colour and song into a setup, and for many bird lovers that is exactly what makes them such enjoyable little birds to keep around.
If you are after a particular type, our team can help you check what is currently available.
Canary Care Starts with the Right Setup
Healthy canaries need more than just a nice cage. They do best with the right everyday care, including a suitable setup, quality seed or balanced feed, clean water, and the basics that help birds stay comfortable and well.
Good care usually comes down to things like:
A clean cage or aviary space
Quality food and fresh water
A sensible daily routine
The right perch and enrichment basics
A calm environment that suits small birds well

Why Canaries Are Such Enjoyable Birds to Keep
Canaries are a lovely option for people who want birds that bring colour and gentle sound into the home or aviary without needing the same kind of direct interaction as a larger parrot. Their song, movement and bright appearance can make even a simple setup feel more alive.
For many bird lovers, that is what makes them so easy to enjoy. They may be small, but they bring a calm, cheerful presence that can quickly become part of the feel of the space around you.
Breeding Canaries
Canaries are easy to breed and typically breed two to three times a year between August and December. The female usually lays four to six small blue eggs, which hatch approximately 14 days after she begins sitting.
Chicks leave the nest at around 16 days and are fully weaned between 25 and 30 days. A wire or cane canary nest is suitable for breeding. Sterilised feathers or coconut fibre nesting material, available from VBC, should be provided for nest building.
Canary in Melbourne and Geelong for Sale
Canaries are native to the Canary Islands, located off the north-west coast of Africa. They are small, beautiful birds best known for their musical whistling. Canaries are tough, easy to care for, and well-suited to first-time bird owners.
They typically grow 12 to 14 cm in size and can live between 7 and 15 years.
