Pet Bird Care – Tips, Tricks and Training

Princess Parrots as Pets

Princess Parrots make wonderful pets and adapt well to living in an indoor cage and being allowed to fly free inside a home. They also enjoy the larger space of an outdoor aviary.

Because of their long tails, they need plenty of space when they perch. As pets, they are delightful in their behaviour and have real personalities of their own. They can learn to mimic the human voice.

Cages for Your Princess Parrot

You will need a cage for your new pet Princess Parrot, and we can definatley help with that. Check out our huge range in the video below.

The Hand Rearing Process

When a bird is hand reared, it is taken away from the parents generally between 2–4 weeks of age. A hand rearing formula is blended with warm water and fed to the baby using a syringe.

This needs to be done 2–3 times during the day. Then the baby’s feathers need to be sponged down to remove excess food (so it doesn’t dry hard). The bedding needs to be cleaned twice daily to make sure the enclosure has no harmful bacteria.

In many cases (except for summer), the bird will need to be kept in a brooder (warm box) until it is old enough to keep itself warm. When you add the many hours of time, the expensive food, electricity, disinfectant, and new bedding, it becomes clear that hand feeding Princess Parrots takes real effort and care.

That’s why hand reared birds are more expensive than standard aviary Princess Parrots—because the work of feeding, warming, cleaning, and handling has already been done before the bird comes home with you.

Princess Parrot Diet & What to Budget For

At VBC we recommend you first decide what you want out of a Princess Parrot and consider your budget—bearing in mind you will need:

A good quality seed mixture
A protein crumble
A cage
Toys
A playground to give your Princess freedom

If you will be keeping the bird inside your home, you will also need a Vitamin D3 calcium supplement (Breeders Secret Avian Sunglo, $29.99)

We hope this information has been informative, and we hope to see you in our store for your new pet Princess Parrot.

Breeding Princess Parrots

Princess parrots like to breed in a hollow box and will easily breed in a colony.

They love eating parrot mix and vegetables such as sprouted beans and corn. For fruit, they prefer apples and pears. In breeding season, they also enjoy meal worms, which are more nutritious for the parents and the chicks. We also recommend a high protein parrot pellet diet.
