Senegal Parrots: What They’re Like

The Senegal Parrot is native to Central & Western Africa. Senegal Parrots are very intelligent and love lots of attention and stimulation. They can learn tricks and mimic words.

Senegal Parrots grow up to 26 cm long and have been known to live up to 50 years of age.

Male vs female (visual differences)

Senegal Parrot males and females cannot be visually told apart from each other. Experienced Senegal owners and breeders can sometimes tell sex through subtle behaviours, but this is not a reliable method. To know with full certainty the sex of your Senegal Parrot, this page recommends getting a DNA test.

Breeding Senegal Parrots

Senegal Parrots reach sexual maturity a bit later than similar sized parrots, usually around 3–4 years of age. Senegals are described here as difficult to breed and needing more privacy than other similar birds.

Senegal Parrots typically breed once per year. The female usually lays 3 eggs, and eggs normally take up to 4 weeks to hatch. Chicks leave the nest at 9–10 weeks and are ready for new homes 2–3 weeks after leaving the nest.

A parrot sized nest box approximately 30 × 70 cm, lined with parrot nesting material available from Victorian Bird Company, is suitable to use for breeding.
